When shopping for a new home, clients talk about their desires for ‘open concept’ kitchens and family rooms and, increasingly, specified dining areas. I believe that the underlying wish behind these types of living spaces is to reconnect with our growing families and friends.

Large, open spaces that feature the kitchen as the heart and central hub of the home do, in fact, bring people together.

Designated dining areas help family dinnertime remain a sacred space for connection and communion with the people we love most.

Really, what we’re all after is to set aside more quality time with the people who matter. The right floor plan can absolutely support that goal. And when we make that time, we might just find ourselves a little less tired, and a little less stressed.

But you don’t have to wait for a new house to feel more connected!

One way I create that time with my family and friends is by cooking a few meals at home during the week. When you make a home-cooked meal, you’re also making memories.

Then, to feel more connected with my community and the changing seasons, I try to shop at the farmers market instead of the grocery store. It’s fun, relaxing, energizing and more earth-friendly than going to the store.

Don’t think you have the time to make dinner? I know we’re all so busy. Start small and keep it simple. This season, challenge yourself to experiment in the kitchen a little more. Trust me: you, your family, and your friends will embrace the change!
